It looked good on the outside, ran well, and drove well. The inside was intact, but one of the filthiest I have ever seen. Every surface was covered with black, caked on filth, and the inside reeked of clove cigarettes and cheap air fresheners.
I am wondering if I can lowball him. Unless he cleans it up, I think he will have a hard time selling a car that nasty.
I bet it can be cleaned.

For the kid? Do you want him smelling like cigarettes everywhere he goes?

A good carpet spot cleaner, a spray bottle of upholstery cleaner, scrub brush and a crap ton of clean hot water should take care of the seats and carpet, but might need a steam cleaner to tackle the air vents. But if you get it cheap enough, you could always source a less smelly interior from a salvage yard, if it doesn’t come clean.

Total crap shoot, my first car I remember it stinking like cigarettes, but it was a repo so no idea of the history. It eventually faded after about a year, but that was after scrubbing the carpets and luckily leather seats

In the case of “get the son to suffer even more for his mistakes” the stink of tobacco tar should be punishing enough

1: Steam clean the cloth surfaces
2: Clorox wipe the non-cloth surfaces
3: Rent an ozone generator and run that for a good bit.

Don’t do it. My parents are/were heavy smokers. The smell always comes back on the first really sunny/humid day.

That can be cleaned up no problem.
A wet’n’dry vacuum, an assortment of microfibre cloths and varying brushes.
The two basic products you’ll need are Valet Pro Enzyme Odour Eater and Gtechniq I2ab Tri-Clean. Both are any bacterial. With a leather interior you should only need the Gtechniq I2ab unless you need to shampoo the carpets.
The Gtechniq I2ab can be used on all surfaces of plastic, leather, fabric and gloss finishes.
The varying brushes will allow you to get into all the many nooks and crannies.
The seating is just as easy as all the rest of the surfaces.

I’d say a lowball is definitely in order. Given that it has leather your job will be much easier.
Make sure you pull the seats before scrubbing the carpets. Heck, depending on how bad it is it looks like you can buy all new carpeting for a CRV for $150 shipping included. I tried to include a link but Kinja needed breakfast.
